Break on Through

In true Scouting fashion, this morning featured a patch collection for the Scouts affected by Monday's tragedy. Our hearts are with those affected. www.emeritbadges.org is where it's at.

That wonderful! I had already planed on going by the scout shop this morning to pick up council patches for our troop to send to the Alaskan Scouts. Love this site!
Where is this box located so I can tell my son?

Awesome! Thanks so much for all the info and photos. I have felt very anxious this week with my scout gone but it is so nice to be able to go to my computer and see new pics and logs....it makes me feel so much better and connected too!
Thanks again!

Your mama needs to teach YOU a few things! It sure looks to me like they are collecting patches from scouts at the jambo to give to the scouts affected by the tragedy...you know like the sons of the men who died who went back home to Alaska? Give me a break.

There is always at least on in every crowd. Best thing to do is ignore people like the one on this site that just wants to stir our emotions. Scouting is a great program and has been great for my son. Even in tragedy the boys will continue to grow into strong men.
Great site! Keep up the great work in keeping us posted!

Excellent site! Thanks. Hang on guys, the weather is supposed to break later today! Sure hope the storms don't interfere with the arena show!

Great web site! Talked to my son today. He is having a blast. He is looking forward seeing the President tonight and the opening arena show tonight.

Any more news about the cause of the tragedy? I have heard that there were only four men doing an eight man job. Who is in charge of assigning troop leaders to jobs at the Boy Scout Jamboree?

Is there like a Grand Pooh-bah of the Troops? Are there committees devoted to different tasks (Food, communications, sanitation)?

What's the organizational structure at the jamboree?

Someone or ones need to take responsibility for this accident. It can't be blown off as a tragic, unforseeable accident. It was poor planning and/or poor implementation of a plan.

Has anyone higher up in the chain of boy scout command taken responsibility for effing up?

My suggestion for dealing with these naysayers is to just ignore them. Don't answer their questions, don't respond to their comments. They seem to have an axe to grind, and they figure they have an audience with the rest of us who have boys at Jambo. It takes two to have a conversation/argument, and right now, it's too hot to argue! The fact is, there are now families associated with the Alaskan troop who have lost their husbands, fathers, brothers. Placing blame will not alter that.

This is a great site, and it allows us to get a glimpse of what is going on there. Let's band together and support our scouts and the leaders who give so much of their time and talents to our sons!
Our thoughts and prayers are with those families grieving the loss of their loved ones.

I find it interesting that you thing BSA is "GI Joe, Jr. brainwashing camp."
At least for my family, you couldn't be further from the truth. My son is already receiving recruiting brochures in the mail (thanks to the hidden law that schools have to turn over contact data as soon as students reach 16). He looks at it, says, "They want me!" and promptly throws it away saying, "I don't want them." We have NEVER considered BSA a para-military organization and do not support it as so.
Please don't generalize.

5:51pm EST (3:51MDT) They just anounced the arena show for tonight is canceled

Anonymous said...

The BSA site says the show is on for 7 p.m. Where is it said that it's been canceled?

BSA site has the radio Link,
I was listening to live radio and they announced on there. They are continuing to announce it as well. Said it was to hot at 103 and they are expecting a storm with lightning tonight.

Here's an article with more detail about the tragedy.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050728/ap_on_re_us/jamboree_deaths

So the doomed leaders did two unusual things:

1. Put the tent right under power lines, contrary to "scout teachings" and common sense.

2. Hired a contractor to help.

There's something fishy here. Is there a Sherlock Holmes badge?

My question would be, were they limited in where they could put up their tent? If that was the place they were assigned and had no choice...then the jamboree organizers screwed up. I spoke to my husband yesterday and from the looks of the photos, it is very sprawled out. It looks like they made a very bad and deadly choice. I don't understand because they all have been in scouting for years. We have county fairs all over the place with tents even bigger than that one and power lines are not an issue. This jamboree has been going on since 1937, at A.P. Hill since 1981 and they have had power lines in the air. Perhaps being from Alaska they don't have these choices to make because there is so much open space, I don't know. It is just pretty logical that you do not put up any kind of anything that big even close to a power line. You see pictures of the gateways and they are all away from the power lines. I get the impression they may have gotten that tent special for the jamboree and did not have experience with it. But this contractor....he should have known! Boy Scout Leaders are volunteers. People who give up hours of their free time. They are not paid but they are trained. What volunteer work do you do or do you just sit at your computer all day and make digs? You must be perfect.

...don't give in to hate. That leads to the dark side.

So why did they hire a contractor this year? Maybe the contractor was extremely inept. Maybe worse. It would be worth learning more about this contractor.

I understand that it was the troop that hired the contractor, not the jambo committee. My sons troop carted all of their belongings down in several tractor trailers. The entire troop was responsible to put every thing together. Regardless of who hired who, it still is very sad.

Emeritbadges: Can you please block this person from posting here? There really is no audience for him here and obviously that is what he is looking for.
